I enjoy seasonal milestones, the familiar things that come round every year. I don’t mean festivals like Christmas or the clocks changing. I mean the natural things that might get missed by folks not lucky enough to live in the country. Examples are the Ash leaf fall, Cuckoo pint leaves poking through, fresh Honeysuckle leaves in Winter, precocious Hazel catkins, the sound of the first Fieldfares.

I have been wanting to chronicle these special things for ages and never got round to it but a reawakened interest in Haiku has encouraged me. I can use a few words and a photo to try and express whatever it is that is on my mind. ‘Mahonia’ is a start, it doesn’t matter too much to me if the reader doesn’t recognise what I have seen, the image and words are as much for me as anyone else.

Cold blue sky, warm buzz
Honey bees scatter drops of gold
tiny petals drift
